Spectrum for the Future Urges Focus on Sharing at Mobile World Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. [September 26, 2023] — Spectrum for the Future, a diverse coalition of innovators, anchor institutions, and technology companies, today urged participants in this year’s Mobile World Congress in Las Vegas to embrace the future of 5G with a specific focus on spectrum sharing. As illustrated in a new report from the Brattle Group released last week, spectrum sharing in the lower 3 GHz band will yield larger public and private returns than exclusive licensing, as proposed by a few major carriers.
“By taking greater advantage of shared spectrum, regulators can deliver more 5G options for consumers, more competition between carriers, and more innovation in wireless technology,” said Spectrum for the Future spokesperson Tamara Smith. “As the Brattle Group demonstrated, that advantage translates into far greater economic returns for taxpayers and private stakeholders alike. We urge mobile leaders meeting in Las Vegas this week to read the report and focus their attention on proven models like the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS), which shows how we can maximize limited spectrum without undermining critical defense applications.”
